Despite widespread opposition, the cities of Windsor, Tecumseh, and LaSalle have all agreed to reintroduce fluoride back into their drinking water systems and are scheduled to make the change later this week. Fluoride was removed from the water systems of these cities in 2013 after city councillors voted to discontinue its use. Now, though, ENWIN Utilities Ltd has announced that it will be adding fluoride back into the drinking water systems for Windsor, Tecumseh, and LaSalle following a 2018 reversal of the 2013 decision to remove fluoride from drinking water.
Now, residents of these cities are once again left to grapple with the proven negative health effects of putting fluoride in drinking water. In this article, we’ll take a look at everything you need to know about this decision to put fluoride back into the water for Windsor, Tecumseh, and LaSalle, including why the decision was made, why so many oppose it, and how you can effectively remove fluoride and all other harmful chemicals from your drinking water with a Berkey water filter.
Fluoride in Drinking Water: Dissecting Both Sides of the Argument
Putting fluoride in drinking water has been a controversial practise ever since Grand Rapids, MI became the first city to add fluoride to its water supply all the way back in 1945. Since then, proponents of fluoridated water have argued that adding fluoride to water promotes better dental health without causing any health consequences.
During a media briefing following the announcement that fluoride would be added back into the water supplies of Windsor, Tecumseh, and LaSalle, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit’s (WECHU) acting medical officer of health Dr. Shanker Nesathurai said, “As a public health intervention, fluoridation of water is a good thing. Having better dental health is good for the community overall — it’s particularly good for people of more disadvantaged social backgrounds.”
However, many aren’t so convinced – and for good reason. For those who care to look, there are a wealth of reputable studies showcasing numerous negative health consequences associated with fluoridated water. A 2006 study from the Harvard School of Public Health, for example, found that fluoridated water leads to a higher risk of developing osteosarcoma – a deadly form of cancer that starts in the bones of the arms and legs.
Another study published by BMC Public Health found that fluoridated water was associated with reduced cognitive performance in children and concluded by saying, “Prenatal and childhood excessive fluoride exposures may impair the intelligence development of school children. Furthermore, children with prenatal fluoride exposure had lower IQ scores than children who were not prenatally exposed.”
These studies are by no means outliers; according to the Fluoride Action Network – an organization that actively opposes the addition of fluoride to drinking water – the proven negative health consequences of excess fluoride include thyroid disease, increased risk of bone fractures, arthritis, male infertility, diabetes, kidney disease, and beyond.
How a Berkey Water Filter Can Protect Against Excess Fluoride Consumption
For those who live in Windsor, Tecumseh, or LaSalle, there’s not much that can be done at this point to reverse the decision to add fluoride back to the cities’ drinking water supply. It took almost a decade to overturn the 2013 decision to remove fluoride, and it could very well take another a decade or longer before the decision can be reversed again.
Thankfully, there is a simple way to eliminate fluoride from your drinking water that doesn’t require waiting years for the slow-moving political machine to take action. By adding a Berkey water filter in your home, you can ensure that your drinking water is fluoride-free even if you happen to live in a place that has decided to add fluoride to its water supply.
